| MOXIBUSTION This is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
technique that involves burning mugwort (a small, spongy herb) to facilitate healing.
The purpose of moxibustion is to
strengthen the blood, stimulate the flow of Qi and maintain general health.
There are two types of moxibustion
Direct and Indirect.
Direct: A small
cone shaped amount of moxa is placed on top of an acupuncture point and burned.
Indirect: In
indirect moxibustion one way is to light a moxa stick and hold it close to the area being
treated for several minutes until the area turns red.
Another way is to use both moxa and
needles. A needle is inserted into an acupuncture point and retained. The end of the
needle is then wrapped in moxa and ignited, generating heat to the point required.
In TCM, moxibustion is generally used on
people who have a cold or stagnant condition. The burning of moxa expels cold and warms
the meridians, leading to the smooth flow of Qi.
