CUPPING

Cupping is one of the best deep tissue massages available as it affects the tissue several inches deep causing the lymphatic system to be activated, helping the body to remove toxins.

It is an ancient form of treatment dating back at least 2000 years, used by the Chinese, Egyptians and the Greeks. Originally used as a method to withdraw puss and blood in the treatment of boils, it was later found to be effective in treating other diseases and was developed into a special therapeutic treatment.

Cupping is a method of relieving congestion or stagnation of the meridians or circulatory system by applying a partial vacuum that is created in a cup either by heat or by suction. Heating the cup or the air inside it with an open flame, then placing it against the skin creates the vacuum. As the air inside the cup cools, it contracts and draws the skin slightly inside. Using cups with a mechanical suction pump can also create the vacuum. Rubber cups are also available that squeeze the air out, and adapt to uneven or bony surfaces. Plastic and glass are the most common materials used today, replacing the horn, pottery, bronze and bamboo cups used in earlier times.

Cups are normally used only on softer tissue and are used singly or in numbers to cover a larger area. They may be used by themselves or placed over an acupuncture needle. Oil can be used to allow the cup to be slowly moved across the skin.

Depending on the specific treatment, skin marking is common after the cups are removed. This may be a simple red ring that disappears quickly, but more aggressive treatments can result in deeper bruising. In general, the longer a cup is left on; the more of a circular mark is created.

The treatments are generally not painful, and would be discontinued if there were more than a very minor discomfort.

Types of Cupping Therapy used at A-I-M For Health:-

Light Cupping: Using a weak suction in the cup to do light cupping, it is suitable for children, people with a weak constitution and elderly people.
Medium Cupping: A medium strength, general purpose cupping.
Strong Cupping: Suction will be great and therefore, is not suitable for children, people with weak constitution and elderly people.
Moving Cupping or Massage Cupping is a great method of massage and will be done by applying oil to the skin and moving the cup, by a weak suction, on the area to be treated.
Needle Cupping: Placing the cup over an acupuncture needle.
Flash Cupping: Cups are applied and removed in quick succession along the area being treated to stimulate it. This is particularly beneficial for people with a weak constitution.
